Last cold day of winter?

I surely hope this is the last cold day of winter. I blew out the heater pilot lights several weeks ago, as the temperature inside the house (without using the airconditioner) was reaching the high 70's. Today the house has to be at least as cold as the inside of the frig. I'm fully clothed, which is burdensome to someone who would prefer to run around the house scantily dressed. I'm even wearing socks and shoes. This really stinks.

I've been enjoying the increasily warmer weather. All of the bulbs I planted last fall have sprung up and the pansies are still looking good. I have azaleas blooming and all the trees are leafing out - finally. So everything was really looking up until today. The temp tonight will hover around freezing and I'm wondering if blankets will be enough.

Turning the heat on isn't as easy as flipping a switch. At least not in this house. We have never converted to central air/heat. In the winter we still rely on two wall furnaces that heat the whole house. And since I blew out the pilots, turning on the heat would mean going through the entire Spring ritual of 'Lighting the Furnaces'. It's not that it takes a great deal of time, it doesn't. The smell that emanates from the furnaces when they are first turned on is, however, gagging, to say the least. And the smell doesn't dissapate fast enough to suit me.

So I've decided (just this moment) that we will live with the cold. It's only supposed to last one more day after all. And we are tough southerners who have withstood tougher times than this. Right? Now......where are my gloves???
